Is your water actually ready for fire season?
Every rural fire plan leans on water sources — ponds, tanks, dip sites, dry hydrants — that mostly sit unwatched between incidents. The worst time to learn a pond is three feet low or a tank valve seized is with smoke on the horizon. This is the pre-season checklist we'd run on any water source a response might depend on, and how monitoring keeps those answers current after the season starts.
The checklist
Run this on every pond, tank, dip site, and dry hydrant your response plans depend on — ideally before the season starts, and again after long dry spells.
1. Level and volume — is the water actually there?
- Measure the current level, don’t estimate it from the bank. Ponds shallow out from the edges, and a source that looks fine can be well below the depth drafting or dipping requires.
- Convert level to usable volume. A pond at half depth holds far less than half its water. Know the volume your plan credits the source with, and what it holds today.
- Check the depth at the draft or dip point specifically — the deepest usable spot, not the average.
2. Access — can apparatus and aircraft actually use it?
- Drive the access road with the vehicle that would respond, not a pickup. Washouts, soft shoulders, and new gates all appear over winter.
- Confirm turnaround and setup room at the draft site.
- For dip sites: reassess approach and departure paths for new obstructions — grown timber, new power lines, structures — and confirm the surface area still fits the bucket work planned there.
3. Hardware — valves, screens, and dry hydrants
- Exercise every valve you’d need under pressure of an incident. A seized valve found in May is maintenance; found during a fire, it’s a failed water source.
- Inspect dry hydrant strainers and couplings; flush if your schedule calls for it. NFPA 1142 (the Standard on Water Supplies for Suburban and Rural Fire Fighting) is the planning reference many rural departments use for stored-water and dry-hydrant installations — your authority having jurisdiction decides how it applies locally.
- Check tank vents, lids, and fittings — a vacuum-locked or debris-fouled tank drafts poorly.
4. Documentation — does dispatch know what you know?
- Update the source list your dispatch and neighboring agencies actually use: location, access notes, current usable volume, and any restrictions.
- Note the owner and contact for private sources, and confirm the arrangement still stands.
- Record the date of the check. An entry from three seasons ago is a rumor, not a plan.
The problem with a checklist: it’s true for a day
Everything above answers “is it ready today.” Levels fall all summer — evaporation, stock use, irrigation draws — and the sources that fail in August looked fine in May.
